Today, I crossed trained – did a workout on the spin bike and weights ( arms, legs, shoulder, abs, back) basically core muscles.
The last two days I took a break from running as I was feeling my running legs needed a break. Likely because the week prior I worked out 4 days straight on the same muscle groups and legs were beginning to feel. This is where cross training comes into play.
Cross training has so much benefits as training to run a marathon. For me, it allows my body to have a balance when it comes to the muscle groups. Along with this advantage, other benefits are :
- Reduces risk of injury where you use different muscles groups
- Increases flexibility and core strength.
- It helps in improving the cardiovascular fitness
- you can still train as recovering from certain injuries — your fitness level stays up and have proper and quicker healing.
- Diversity for the mind, body and soul.
There are many cross-training work outs you could do such as
- Walking
- Swimming
- Cycling
- Spinning
- Rowing,
- Weight/strength training
- Yoga/Pilates/Stretching exercises
- Elliptical
- Hiking
- Skiing/ Cross Country Skiing
- Snow shoeing
- Skating
And the list can go on.. the above are a few.
I, personally stick with weights, spin bike, elliptical, hiking, walking, swimming, stretching exercises and now learning a new activity – cycling and last year, I learned snow shoeing. It is fun to bring in diversity.
Sometimes , I will take a break from running for a week or two and when I return back to running – my running improves and I can go longer…
I would encourage all to incorporate cross training activities as running or training for a race.
